NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Two men are accused of stealing thousands of dollars worth in sunglasses at Norfolk Premium Outlets on May 8. It happened during store hours, as the culprits distracted an employee to get it done. The whole thing was caught on camera.
Sienna Chadwick, sales rep at Topline Eyewear, clocked in at the time and greeted them like any other customer.
“They said that they were looking for a present for their dad and that they had cash on them,” Chadwick said. “They didn’t tell me how much or anything.”
They were interested in a pair of Dita sunglasses. So Chadwick put them by the counter. Then the two men wanted to look at a Cartier pair. Combined, the two are worth about $5,000.
“We have to hold the ID for that,” Chadwick explained. “They had their ID and the case on the back of their phone. So I held that.”
It was all captured on surveillance video. One man asks to take pictures of the expensive sunglasses. Then the other man distracts Chadwick with questions about the kids section. Meanwhile, the man on the right puts the sunglasses in his pocket, closes the case and puts it back in the box. He does it again with a second pair.
“They handed me this giant stack of cash,” Chadwick recalled. “So I had to end up marking all of it and counting it.”
The two men say they need to get more cash, pay for a spare case, then walk out with the shades. They never came back and she did not realize they were stolen until the men were long gone. Thankfully, the store has high quality surveillance video.
“So our stone store owner really cares about his business and cares about his employees,” Chadwick said.
About two years ago, before Chadwick started working there, 10 On Your Side covered another theft at Topline Eyewear. It was a brazen smash and grab with half a million dollars in glasses stolen.
Since these last two thefts, security measures have been enhanced at the store.
