NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A Norfolk General District Court granted bond Thursday to a man accused of climbing through and over fencing to access one of the runways at Norfolk International Airport.

Da’Kwon Crawley, 27, was taken into custody on the airport grounds on March 26 and charged with trespassing. He had been held in jail since the incident.

The Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office opposed the move to grant bond, arguing that there was no confirmed place for him to go and that some mental health issues may have contributed to the incident.

The prosecutor noted that Crawley was cooperative with police when he was arrested while walking on Runway 23. He told officers that he climbed through a hole in an exterior fence, and then over a second fence. He was found bleeding from lacerations sustained while scaling barbed wire.

She also said that Crawley shut down operations at the airport for 21 minutes while security scrambled to locate and apprehend him.

The judge ultimately set bond at $2500, saying Crawley presented a danger to himself more than to anyone else. As a condition, Crawley is required to continue receiving treatment from the Norfolk Community Services Board. He’s also barred from the airport property until the trial is over.

Crawley’s next court date is scheduled for July 8.
