CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – The Chesapeake Police Department is investigating a fatal crash on Hanbury Road.
Chesapeake Police said they received a call about a single-vehicle accident at about 6:35 a.m. The accident occurred between the 300 and 400 block of Hanbury Road.
Chesapeake first responders rushed to the scene, but said the person, later identified as 19-year-old Connor James Dommel, had passed away.
“In reference to the families, we’re sorry for your loss,” said a Chesapeake Police Public Information Officer. They also advised drivers to watch their speed and be mindful of road conditions.
Police closed down the portion on Hanbury Road West Saturday morning while they worked to learn what caused the crash.
“Right now its under investigation,” explained an officer. “We’re just trying to determine the factors of what happened in regards to this accident.”
According to Virginia’s Traffic Records Electronic Data System (TREDS), Hanbury Road West has seen a total of 29 crashes and a dozen people hurt in less than five years.
Saturday morning, the portion of Hanbury Road West was still closed. All lanes have since reopened.
A GoFundMe has been set up on behalf of the Dommel family to cover funeral expenses.
