NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Newport News police are investigating a homicide after a 79-year-old woman was found dead in her residence on Monday morning.

On April 21, officers were dispatched to the 300 block of Heacox Lane around 11:35 a.m. in reference to a welfare check.

Upon entry into the residence, they located a woman, identified as Hendrika Elizabeth Richard, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Following further investigation and the medical examiner’s evaluation, the incident has been ruled a homicide.

The Newport News Police Department has a person of interest. The Commonwealth’s Attorney Office will be consulted in reference to any charges.

There is no danger to the community.
