CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A woman faces charges after a wrong way head-on collision with a Chesapeake Police officer overnight.

According to officials, the crash happened on South Military Highway near the intersection of Smith Avenue just after midnight Friday.

The on-duty officer was traveling in the eastbound lane behind a truck when the truck quickly swerved to avoid a Ford Fusion driving westbound in the eastbound lanes, directly toward oncoming traffic.

The driver of that truck, Dennis Smith, described his experience to 10 On Your Side.

“When I saw her, it was almost too late, she was doing 50 or more towards me flying,” Smith said. “I don’t think she ever hit the brakes. I happen to look up, [in] a split second, I realized it’s headlights, not taillights. Car was coming straight at me.”

He said he swerved at the last second to avoid getting hit.

“As soon as I jumped the curb, I heard boom,” Smith said. “I knew who she hit, like he was right behind me.”

Smith then said he parked his car to go and check on the officer. He said the officer had gotten out and started to help the woman that was driving the other vehicle.

“I’m asking him if he’s all right,” Smith said. “He was like, ‘I’m getting her. I’m making sure she’s all right,'” Smith said.

The officer was unable to avoid the Ford Fusion, resulting in a head-on collision.

Both the officer and the driver of the Fusion were taken to a hospital for treatment.

“Their airbags were deployed,” Smith said. “Both front ends were totally smashed. So I know, I know he had to felt it.”

Chesapeake police said the officer was wearing a seatbelt which likely reduced the severity of injuries.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, police said. Charges are pending against that driver. WAVY reached back out to Chesapeake police Monday afternoon for an update. They said the driver was still in the hospital and that she would be charged once released.

This incident remains under investigation.
