YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — One man is in critical condition, and another man is detained following a road rage incident in Yorktown Wednesday afternoon.
Deputies responded to the Grafton Station Apartment complex at approximately 2 p.m. for reports of a shooting that happened in the area of Picadilly Loop and Justice Lane.
Upon arrival, deputies located a man who was suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. They also located and detained the shooter and secured the firearm that was used in the shooting.
Following an investigation, deputies determined the road rage began between two vehicles in the area of George Washington Memorial Highway and Denbigh Boulevard. The shooter’s vehicle stopped in the Grafton Station Apartments complex, and a passenger in the other vehicle exited, opened the driver’s side door of the shooter’s vehicle and began assaulting the driver with his fists.
The driver suffered facial and head injuries as a result of the assault. Investigators said the driver then grabbed a handgun from the vehicle’s console and shot the man in the abdomen.
The shooting victim was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery for the gunshot wound.
No charges have been filed, but the incident remains under investigation.
The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office assured there was no ongoing threat to the community.
Nearby residents, however, are still concerned.
“That’s very sad, very scary because a lot of people have road rage, right, and then for me, I have younger daughters who are driving, so I want to make sure that they understand that people are crazy,” said resident Brandi Arrington. “Don’t be pulling over at any old place, don’t be yelling and flipping people the bird. Just be calm and keep going.”
Arrington said she’s moving because of violent incidents like this. She is urging people to think before doing something that could change lives forever.
“The kids are free rein, so it’s scary to know that road rage happened and a bullet could’ve went anywhere and hit one of these beautiful children running out here, so that is scary,” Arrington said.
