HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A pedestrian has died after being struck by a vehicle in Hampton on Monday evening.
Hampton Public Safety Communications received a call at approximately 7:50 p.m. for a pedestrian accident that happened in the 200 block of West Mercury Boulevard.
Crews with Hampton Police and Hampton Fire and Rescue arrived and discovered a man, later identified as 64-year-old John Knight, lying in the roadway. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The preliminary investigation determined that Knight was attempting to cross the westbound lanes of West Mercury Boulevard when he was struck by a passing vehicle. There was no designated crosswalk at the location he attempted to cross, according to police.
The driver of the vehicle stayed on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
The crash remains under investigation by members of the Hampton Police Division’s Reconstruction Team.
