NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Things are looking a little bit fresher at the Norfolk Scope Arena this spring.

Starting on Wednesday, the City of Norfolk announced the Scope is undergoing a power wash — something many residents have asked the city to complete for years. The project is part of a historical and restoration effort, according to the city.

“Maintaining the original look and function of the buttresses is paramount,” a city spokesperson said. “Any exterior work on the building must adhere to preservation standards to protect the historical integrity of the structure.”

The much-needed upkeep comes around a year after plans to renovate both the Chrysler Hall and Scope Arena were revealed.

While the Scope has gotten several upgrades within the past two decades, including a new sound system and seats, city officials said they would like to increase the 11,000-seat capacity.

The current plans for a remodel include ADA-accessibility and will add an additional 1,050 new seats for sporting events and 750 for concerts. The focus is to help preserve and restore the buttresses to their original condition, addressing surface cracks and restoring their appearance without altering their design.
