NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The Old Dominion football team was on the practice field Thursday for the first practice of the spring offseason.

The Monarchs are coming off of a 5-7 season, but with experience at quarterback and on defense, some are expecting ODU to make a run at a bowl game this season.

Colton Joseph is a sophomore and started eight games at quarterback last season. He’ll compete with Quinn Henicle, who started one game last season, but took a redshirt year.

“I think they did a great job today,” head coach Ricky Rahne said. “I thought generally today our quarterbacks played excellent.”

There’s a lot of continuity with the Monarchs. They are one of 14 FBS programs to have their offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator and special teams coordinator return together for a third season.

On defense, linebacker Jason Henderson seemed like his old self after taking a medical redshirt after a knee injury.

Playing without a brace, Rahne said the difference between Henderson today and the first day of practice last year was “night and day.”

ODU’s spring game is Saturday, April 19.
