GILES COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – An industrial accident at the Celanese Plant in Narrows has injured several employees and is reported to be contained with emergency personnel working to clear the area.

Celanese Communications spokesperson, Jamaison Schuler, has told WFXR News the incident occurred around 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 20 at the Cellulose Acetate Unit. A release of acetic acid vapor was released, injuring six workers.

Two individuals are currently reported to be in critical condition and one is in stable condition. The remaining workers who were injured have been treated and released. All other site employees have been accounted for.

The vapor was confined within the fence line of the immediate area of the plant, according to Jamaison Schuler, and no further impacts are expected.

Giles County Sheriff Chief Deputy, Scott Moye, told WFXR that four of the injured workers were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Celanese has initiated its emergency response plan and is “fully cooperating with first responders.”

The cause of the incident is still being investigated.
