NORFOLK, Va.(WAVY) — Four people were injured Wednesday morning in a Norfolk house fire, including one who has life-threatening injuries, Norfolk Fire-Rescue said.

Neighbor Torrie Creamer, who lives across the street and called 911 after first noticing the fire, told WAVY that a 16-year-old sophomore at Granby High School was the person who was seriously injured as a result of the fire.

“I was sleeping in,” Creamer said. “My daughter actually heard our neighbor across the street, and she came running in our room, waking us up. And we immediately jumped out to see what we could do to help her.”

According to officials, crews were dispatched to the 8000 block of Galveston Blvd. at 1:48 a.m. for the report of a residential structure fire. When crews arrived on scene, they found heavy smoke coming from the second floor of the residence.

When crews entered the home, they conducted a search and attacked the fire, and they rescued someone from the second floor.

Crews said the victim was unable to escape due to the fire blocking off access to the stairs.

Creamer has been in contact with the mother and said that the family had been at the house for 17 years. Four people were in the house at the time of the fire, according to the neighbor, including the mother, her two daughters and a friend of the oldest daughter.

“My husband and our neighbor down the street tried to run in and I yelled for them to get out just because it was just too much smoke,” Creamer said. “And I believe that the cops got here first and I believe I saw the cop run in. But I think I saw him also run back out and collapse.”

Three Norfolk Police officers who had attempted to rescue the victim were overcome by smoke and heat. All three officers needed to be treated for non life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported.

“When the firemen came, they busted open the window and a big gulf of flames came out of the top of the roof,” Creamer said. “So, the only thing that I could do at that point was just pray.”

Fire crews were able to enter the house and rescue the 16-year-old Granby High School student from a second-floor bedroom. Her mother is now at her side in the hospital.

“She’s doing what any other mother would do at this moment,” Creamer said. “She’s distraught. She’s upset. A million things are going through her head. But at this moment, her mother and the whole entire family just need many prayers [for] their daughter — she’s a strong, strong young lady.”

The home did have a working smoke detector that alerted the family of the fire. According to Norfolk Fire and Rescue. The cause of the fire is still under investigation and the victim is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. They are also determining if the Red Cross will be needed for the remaining household.

The fire was marked under control at 2:27 a.m.
