SMITHFIELD, Va. (WAVY) — Fundraisers for Officers Christopher Reese and Cameron Girvin were held across Virginia over the weekend. The two Virginia Beach officers were shot and killed while on duty just over a week ago.
“I was blown away,” said Michael Christou. “We have a huge police presence in the restaurant.”
Christou and his father co-own The Cockeyed Rooster in Smithfield. He said they were stunned to hear the news.
“We’re really close with all the officers around town,” he explained. “I can’t imagine, just for Virginia Beach and the city as a whole, you know, losing officers. It’s absolutely terrible. I couldn’t imagine.”
The restaurant owners felt they had to do something to help support the community, so they scheduled a weekend-long fundraiser. For each bill, 20% of each total went to the families of Reese and Girvin. They even plated up t-shirts and 100% of those sales went to the families too.
In total, the pair was able to donate more than $6,000 to the Virginia Beach Police Foundation.
“It feels really great. You know, we’re extremely blessed and lucky to be able to have this kind of reach and this kind of support from the community,” said Christou. “I know every bit goes a long way, so we’re just trying to do what we can and hopefully, this can this helps them out. I hope whatever we can raise that it goes to the families and helps them just a little bit during this terrible time.”
