VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A man was arrested Saturday after Virginia Beach police saw a vehicle make an illegal U-turn to avoid a checkpoint.

The Virginia Beach Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit organized two safety checkpoints to deter impaired driving and ensure that vehicles were properly licensed, inspected and registered.

At one checkpoint in the 4400 block of Bonney Road, officers noticed a vehicle making an illegal U-turn to escape the area. A police officer initiated a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled.

Officers canvassed the area and apprehended the suspect, Earl Allen, 34, of Virginia Beach. He faces multiple charges, including felony eluding, reckless driving, possessing ammunition as a convicted felon, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, obstruction of justice, expired registration and illegal tint.
