NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — It was an absolute battle in Newport News Tuesday night as Denbigh and Woodside duked it out in an overtime thriller, but it was the Wolverines (17-1) who walked away with the 68-66 win over the Patriots (13-5).

It didn’t seem like it would be this close early on, as Woodside was on the verge of blowing out Denbigh, jumping out to an early 21-5 lead, but the Patriots, behind their two guards, Kevin Parker and Jai’Quan Gray, combined for 43 points and willed Denbigh back into this game. Gray hit a deep three with seconds left in the fourth quarter to tie it up and send it to overtime.

In the free basketball period, Wolverines senior Masiah Wells-Stevens took over, scoring two clutch buckets as part of his 17 points. Gray had another chance to tie at the end of overtime, but his shot fell wide right.
