SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Suffolk Police shot a man while attempting to take the person into custody Tuesday morning and now, that man faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, police said.

Anthony Bonds, 27, of Norfolk, has been charged with attempted murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, abduction, shooting into an occupied dwelling, the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, strangulation, destruction of property over $1,000, aggravated malicious wounding, brandishing a firearm and reckless handling of a firearm. Suffolk Police announced the charges against Bonds Wednesday.
Around 6:55 a.m. Tuesday, Suffolk Police were called to the scene of a person with a weapon in the 100 block of S. Lloyd St. Officers arrived on scene to find a man suffering non life-threatening gunshot wounds as a result of an altercation with a “known offender,” according to police.
At this time, it’s unclear whether police meant that the offender was known to law enforcement, or if the person who was shot knew the person who shot him.
Carl Riddick was on South Lloyd Street and saw police respond.
“Then I saw them walking with their dogs, and running, and just everything just going crazy,” Riddick said.
The suspect fled on foot and around 8:30 a.m., police received a call for a suspicious person nearby that matched the suspect’s description. Suffolk Police arrived to the 700 block of Nixon Dr., where they found the suspect, who again fled on foot.
While trying to take the suspect into custody, officers shot at the suspect, injuring the person.
Nixon Drive residents heard those shots, and one resident spoke to 10 On Your Side.
“Early this morning, it was a couple of shots,” one resident said, “off into the distance loud shots. This is a quiet neighborhood. You basically never hear anything like that around here. Everybody knows everybody around here, so we were wondering what was going on.”
The suspect received medical attention from Suffolk Police until Suffolk Fire & Rescue arrived and treated the person on the scene before transporting them to a nearby hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
The involved Suffolk Police officers have been placed on administrative leave pending a criminal and administrative investigation. The incident remains under investigation.
