VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Three former Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office deputies were indicted for the in-custody death of Rolin Hill that occurred in June 2024.
Commonwealth’s Attorney for the city of Virginia Beach, Colin D. Stolle, announced Friday that Kevin B. Wilson, Michael C. Kidd and Eric G. Baptiste were charged with second degree murder. Baptiste was additionally charged with five counts of assault and battery, while Kidd was charged with two counts of assault and battery.

Stolle requested that a Special Grand Jury be impaneled to ensure the incident received a complete and thorough investigation. Over the course of several weeks, the Special Grand Jury met on three separate occasions and heard evidence pertaining to Hill’s arrest and booking into the Virginia Beach Correctional Center.
At the conclusion of their meeting Friday, the Special Grand Jury returned the aforementioned indictments.
“My most heartfelt sympathies are with the Hill family as they mourn the tragic loss of Rolin,” Stolle said. “I continue to ask for the public’s patience as this case moves through the court process. As in all cases involving the tragic loss of life, my office is committed to seeking justice for Rolin Hill.”
Virginia Beach Sheriff Rocky Holcomb released a statement following the indictment, which can be read in full below:
I have faith in the criminal justice system to ensure justice is served for both Rolin Hill and the individuals involved in this incident. For that reason, I requested an independent, third-party investigation by Virginia State Police immediately upon being notified of what occurred and cooperated fully with that investigation. That investigation ultimately led to the charging decision announced by the Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office today. I remain committed to transparency and accountability with the community. However, due to the pending criminal proceedings and the need to protect the integrity of those proceedings, I cannot release additional information about this incident at this time. My heart continues to be with the family of Mr. Hill and I send them my sincerest condolences and support as they seek healing and justice.
Rocky Holcomb
The Commonwealth Attorney’s Office is prohibited from commenting further on the Special Grand Jury proceedings or the actions of those charged in Hill’s death.
The Virginia Beach NAACP has been very vocal about the details surrounding Hill’s death. President Eric Majette says the indictment is a start but he hopes justice is the finish.
“We’ve been following this case for quite a minute right and we’re committed to obtaining additional information to ensure justice is served but we also stand with the family as we said before and the community affected by this tragedy,” Majette said.
He says his hope now is in the court process. The Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office says state police is working with the suspects’ attorneys on their surrender. Once in custody, they will be held at the Chesapeake city jail due to their affiliation with the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office.
There is a prayer vigil in Hill’s honor happening Saturday, Jan. 4. at Mount Trashmore. The community is welcome to attend.
