NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — There was some high-level basketball up on the Peninsula Tuesday night, as both former state champions Woodside and Hampton hit the hardwood, trying to improve their records on the season and push toward another title.

The Wolverines (5-0) took a trip to Denbigh to take on Kevin Parker and the Patriots. It was a back-and-forth affair in the first half, as Parker and company turned Woodside over multiple times, and got a few big buckets to get the home gymnasium rockin’.

VCU commit Silas Barksdale shut it down when he needed to, though. He led the Wolverines with 25 points as Woodside took down the Patriots 57-45.

Fifteen miles south, the reigning Class 4 champion Hampton Crabbers took down crosstown rival Phoebus Phantoms, as Abraham Taft and Gavin Kay led the way for Hampton (4-2) in a 62-39 win.
