HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A man was arrested after a shooting on Saunders Road Friday afternoon, Hampton Police said.

According to officials, around 1:45 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Saunders Road for reports of a shooting.

Officers arrived and found an adult female suffering from a non life-threatening gunshot wound. She was transferred to a hospital to be treated for her injuries.

After an investigation, 35-year-old Matthew Persaud was arrested. Police said the victim was visiting her children’s father, Persaud, at his home. While the victim was leaving, Persaud began physically assaulting the victim, eventually discharging a firearm at the victim, police said.

Persaud was charged with maiming, abduction, strangulation, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, domestic assault and an emergency protective order.
