VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Three firefighters with the Virginia Beach Fire Department (VBFD) are injured after a house fire on Semmie Drive rekindled early Wednesday morning.
According to officials, around 10 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18, crews were dispatched to the 700 block of Semmie Drive in the Pungo section of the city for reports of a single-story house fire.
Crews arrived to the scene and found heavy smoke and flames coming from an attached garage, which quickly spread to the attic. The fire was considered marked out by 10:53 p.m. and no injuries were reported at this time.
Several hours later, at 4:16 a.m. on Wednesday, crews were dispatched to the same area, as the fire had rekindled. The house was fully engulfed in flames by the time fire crews arrived at the scene.
A neighbor, Joe Franzese, was the one who called in the second fire just after 4 a.m., saying the entire garage lit up the night sky.
Franzese was also there when an exterior brick wall fell onto three firefighters, which left them with non life-threatening injuries.
“His two co-workers came and picked him up, and all he says is, ‘boy is that hot,'” Franzese said while remembering the resiliency of the firefighters.
Franzese and other neighbors are now focusing on helping the family, consisting of two parents and three children, recover.
“I wish them the best,” Franzese said. “I pray everyone’s okay. This is traumatic, it’s materialistic, you have one another. Embrace it, and know that you’re blessed to have that.”
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
