WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — The family of a 21-year-old mother who was shot and killed in Winston-Salem a year ago is still praying those responsible are finally caught.

It’s a late-night phone call Beatrice Brown won’t ever forget.

“The person let me know she wasn’t here anymore,” Brown said.

Winston-Salem police told Brown her beloved 21-year-old daughter Maxine Knights had been shot and killed.

“It was a devastating thing. It was unreal. It still feels unreal,” Brown said.

On April 22, 2023, Knights, who aspired to be a nurse one day, was at a party at Happy Hill Park on Alder Street.

Investigators say over 200 people were there when multiple people began shooting.

Police say five people were hit, and Maxine died at the scene.

She leaves behind a two-year-old daughter, who Brown says keeps her family going.

“My daughter was about family and about life … We keep going because we know she has a daughter: Our granddaughter that we will continue to support and love,” Brown said.

One year later, police have made no arrests.

Brown walks around with a necklace of her daughter to make sure her name and legacy are never forgotten. She hopes someone comes forward with the answers they’ve been searching for.

“We want anyone who knows anything to come out and speak with someone and get that message out because if it was your loved one, you would want the same. We want justice for our daughter,” Brown said.

Brown also called on city leaders to have better surveillance cameras in public parks.
