VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Six apartments were damaged and 21 people displaced following a fire in the 1400 block of Dory Drive at the Waterfront Apartments off Holland Road in Virginia Beach Wednesday, officials said.
Crews arrived on scene just before 6 p.m. to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the second and third floors of a three-story apartment.
The apartment was fully on fire and it spread quickly to the third floor and attic. The fire was marked under control around 6:22 p.m., and was deemed out by 6:56 p.m.
Fire officials said six apartment units were directly affected, with 21 people and two cats displaced.
“I just couldn’t believe it,” said Waterfront Apartment resident Alesia Escobar. “I wanted to cry for them. I wanted to go over and offer them something, at least, like, get them a hotel for the night.”
No residents or firefighters were injured, and there were no injuries to pets.
The Red Cross has been notified, and fire officials confirm that the fire was caused by an unattended lit candle in one of the units.
