ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WAVY) – A man suspected in a robbery in Elizabeth City last summer is now in custody.
According to police, Tawon Noel Alexander Smith was arrested and charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon, first degree kidnapping and resisting a public officer.
Officials say that on July 24 just after 9 p.m., Elizabeth City officers responded to the 400 block of Bell Street for reports of a possible robbery.
The victim told officers that a man offered him a ride home. During the ride, the victim said the other man struck him in the face with a firearm and then robbed him of money and a cell phone.
Eventually, the victim was able to escape. He was later taken to Sentara Albemarle Medical Center to be treated for non life-threatening injuries.
Smith was arrested in Norfolk on Dec. 19 by the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force. On Jan. 4, Smith consented to be voluntarily transferred to Albemarle District Jail with a $151,000 secure bond.
