FARMVILLE, Va. (WAVY/WRIC) — A Hampden-Syndey College student from Williamsburg was killed and three others were injured in an early-morning crash in Farmville Friday.
According to Virginia State Police, the single-vehicle crash occurred at around 12:47 a.m. at the intersection of Darlington Heights Road and Abilene Road.
Police say a 2009 Audi A4, driven by 21-year-old Tristan Georing of Williamsburg, was going westbound down Route 665 when it ran off the road as it took a curve. The vehicle went into a ditch, then hit a tree. When first responders arrived on scene, they found the vehicle fully involved in flames.
A spokesperson for Hampden-Sydney College confirmed that four students were involved in the crash and that one of them, 22-year-old Alexander Byrne, died at the scene. He said their community is ‘heartbroken.’
State Police said Georing was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and two other passengers were also hospitalized.
Charges are pending.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the student who passed away, as well as the other students, who remain hospitalized,” H-SC Director of Communications Gordon Neal said in a statement. “We have shared with our students and the campus community that counseling services are available to all who are struggling with this tragedy.
“Losing a member of our community is absolutely heartbreaking, and we must all support each other in this time of grief.”
It is unclear at this time what caused the crash, which remains under investigation.
