NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Jeff Johnson took the oath of office on Thursday to  become the newest fire chief in Newport News. 

City officials say Johnson was fire chief in Salinas, California, and has more than 30 years experience in emergency medical services and firefighting.

In his new role in Newport News, he will lead a staff of 380 people working in 11 different stations and handle an operation budget of $34 million dollars.

Johnson says he was humbled to join the department. 

City leaders named Johnson as the new chief Last month. He replaces retired chief Robert Alley.
