PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Police say two men died and two other people were injured in a crash in Portsmouth on Tuesday night.

According to Portsmouth Police, the call for the two-vehicle crash came in just after 6 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Frederick Boulevard and Deep Creek Boulevard.

 35-year-old John Michael Piovane and 37-year-old Brian Credle died at the scene, and a man and woman, Jessi Merritt, were taken to the hospital for treatment.

“Everything is a blur,” Merritt said. Merritt, who was in a relationship with Credle, was in the car with Piovane and Credle and was the only survivor of the three. She and Credle were together for 12 years.

Merritt says Credle worked at a local Portsmouth church and describes his as, “The most laid back. Nicest, caring, funny and kind.”

Merritt said the group was headed to the store for a routine trip to grab cigarettes. “We took every day. A hundred times,” she said.

Merritt said they pulled up to the intersection of Deep Creek and Frederick Boulevards. She said she is pretty sure they had a green light. She can remember a truck coming at a high speed toward their car.

“I was thinking hit his breaks, hit his breaks,” Merritt said.

She said the truck then collided with their car.

“I couldn’t breathe, and I looked back and I saw Brian and Jon and they weren’t moving,” Merritt said.

She learned two days later that her fiance and best friend had passed away. She was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for her injuries.

“I have fractured bones in my face, stitches in my eyes, fractured bones in my hands, broken ribs in front and broken ribs in the back,” she said.

Recovery isn’t the only thing on her mind. She has to prepare for a funeral and find a new place to live.

“I’ve got 60 days. I was not on the lease. The lease was in Brian’s name was on the lease. My landlord says I have 60 days to get out,” Merritt said.

The community has set up a GoFundMe to cover the funeral cost and help her son, Jackson. She said she couldn’t fathom the support she has received.

The support helped her move forward, but questions still linger. “I would like to know who was driving the truck. If anybody saw what happened.” 

In an update Thursday, police said the crash was still under investigation and more information would be released when it’s available.

No charges have been taken out at this time.
