VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A shooting at a gas station in Virginia Beach on Tuesday night left a 19-year-old Virginia Beach man dead.
It happened just after 9:15 p.m. at the gas station at the intersection of Lynnhaven Parkway and Pleasant Valley Road. The victim was identified as 19-year-old Jawan Johnson, of Virginia Beach. He was shot in the chest.
“My heart is just so heavy, I loved my brother. I didn’t want him to leave like this,” said his brother, Jaki Johnson.
Family members told 10 On Your Side Jawan Johnson was one of seven siblings. On Wednesday, several of his brothers and extended family posted up at the gas pump where he was killed, turning it into a makeshift memorial.
“To celebrate my brother, celebrate his life,” said Jaki Johnson.
Jawan Johnson was previously a football player at Salem High School.
“He played every position,” Jaki Johnson told WAVY 10. “He was a beast, quarterback, running back, you name it.”
10 On Your Side went to the scene of the shooting and saw Johnson’s body on the ground next to a gas pump, but police didn’t confirm it was a homicide until Wednesday morning. Yellow crime scene tape and police vehicles surrounded the pumps and gas station parking lot.
Police said the shooting suspect has been identified and detectives were not looking for anyone else in connection to the shooting. They said they believe there’s no active threat to the community.
On June 3, family members and loved ones held a vigil at the gas station.
