NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Norfolk police have charged a suspect in connection to a shooting that left a William & Mary football player dead last week.

Police said Tuesday 20-year-old Kri’Shawn D. Beamon is charged with second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Nathan Evans, of Mechanicsville.

Officers responded to the 800 block of West 43rd Street on March 21, where they found Evans shot on the sidewalk. Medics pronounced Evans dead at the scene.

Police arrested Beamon on Monday afternoon at his home in Chesapeake.

“All seven of them in tandem went through there and they stayed out here for a while, a couple of hours,” said Derrilyn Shaun Threatt, who saw the arrest.  “I saw the police car right there parked in the middle of the road.  I saw him put a young kid, young dude, put him in the backseat.”

Beamon is also charged with robbery and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in connection to Evans’ death.

Evans was a sophomore running back at William & Mary and a former standout at Lee-Davis High School.

William & Mary held a campus-wide gathering for Evans on Monday evening at Kaplan Arena. With hundreds of people in attendance, Evans was remembered as a great friend, a talented athlete and a loving son.

Teammate Carl Fowler said, He was an encourager. He was a believer. He saw people’s potential and believed that they could do things they never considered.

A family friend read a letter from Evans’ mother.

Though the world ahead seems extremely dark without you, I will be looking for your light every minute of every day.,” read Stephanie Dulaney.  “Shine bright, baby.  Light up the world like only you can.  Momma loves you.”

Beamon is being held at Norfolk City Jail without bond. His next court date is March 27.
