NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A 29-year-old man was arrested after a shooting over the weekend in Newport News.

According to police, the call for the shooting came in early Sunday morning (around midnight) in the 700 block of 36th Street.

Officers located a 26-year-old Newport News man suffering from a non life-threatening gunshot wound.

The preliminary investigation found the victim got into a verbal altercation with the suspect before being shot. Warrants were later obtained for 29-year-old Derick Anthony Tucker, of the 1100 block of Hampton Avenue. He was taken into custody just before 5 a.m. in the 700 block of 26th and charged with one count each: malicious wounding, shooting in a public place, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, reckless handling of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a violent convicted felon.
